Yeah, I used to get really down about losses, but I’ve found that they can be followed up by some great winners. So I just focus on keeping my head in the game and not beating myself up too much when I lose. Learn from it and move on.

In my mind, that screwed up my track record which I wanted to look all pristine and impressive. I worked very hard to try and find edges that were highly accurate (a very difficult task). When I would start to see losses building higher than I was expecting or even when a fairly accurate edge wasn’t working for me that time, it would really screw with my confidence and I would get jumpy and try to adjust or exit sooner than was necessary (basically trading emotionally).

I really thought that accuracy was the key, but over time, I learned that you don’t need to be highly accurate to be profitable. It’s more about risk management. Some trading stories and a quote really knocked it home for me. “Amateurs think about how much money they could make. Professionals think about how much money they could lose.” When I took a closer look at my methods, I realized that I had fairly little risk management. Since then, I’ve really focused in on tight entries where I know very quickly if my trading hypothesis is wrong, then I can exit very quickly. Additionally, I make sure that I trade a position size that doesn’t freak me out and isn’t greed motivated which helps me keep my head in the game.

Haha, yeah it was a little bit of an adjustment. Very well put, a lot of people don’t realize that trading is more a journey of self-discovery than anything else. Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words!

I can just imagine you sitting among those traders having a “I’m not in Kansas no more” moment! Sounds like you adjusted very quickly. Even if you didn’t stick around, it probably did kindle your fire to do your own trading.

For me, trading has forced me to look at myself in the mirror everyday. As every vulnerability, vice & character defects are exposed sooner or later by the market. In order to become successful, I must confront them all. Basically, I found out the hard way that to become better at trading, I must become a better person. More disciplined, more patient, more organized, etc. I also weigh everything now in terms of risk and reward. Funny how a little concept can permeate through everyday life.

I still struggle mightily everyday with my own shortcomings. I’m absolutely certain that the day I manage to overcome them (instead of the other way around) is the day I become a professional trader for good.

Keep up the excellent work and good trading!
