This is not to be confused with the bat pattern, which is a harmonic chart pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Not many websites talk about the Batman, so let's take a trip into the cave where this this mysterious chart pattern lives, and find out what it's all about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It's called a Batman because it looks like the top of Batman's cowl. These patterns are easy to spot because of the characteristic &#8220;ears&#8221; and price consolidation between them.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019112\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman-chart-explained.jpg\" alt=\"Batman chart pattern explained\" width=\"1561\" height=\"882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman-chart-explained.jpg 1561w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman-chart-explained-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/batman-chart-explained-1536x868.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1561px) 100vw, 1561px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But that's not all that you should be looking for.<\/p>\n<p>Let's get into a more detailed description of what to look for in a Batman and how it can be traded.<\/p>\n<h2>Video Demonstration<\/h2>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d_0EyoGTE0E\" width=\"840\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Batman Chart Pattern Definition<\/h2>\n<p>The &#8220;Batman&#8221; is basically a variation of the <strong>double top\/bottom reversal pattern<\/strong>. Here's what you are looking for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong trend<\/li>\n<li>Price hits key zone<\/li>\n<li>Failed high volatility spike<\/li>\n<li>Consolidation period<\/li>\n<li>Another failed high volatility spike in the same direction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is an example of a bearish Batman. We would expect price to drop after the second failed spike and we would look for an opportunity to go short.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anatomy-of-batman-chart.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1019111 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anatomy-of-batman-chart.png\" alt=\"Anatomy of a Batman chart\" width=\"1561\" height=\"833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anatomy-of-batman-chart.png 1561w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anatomy-of-batman-chart-768x410.png 768w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/anatomy-of-batman-chart-1536x820.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1561px) 100vw, 1561px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The important thing to look at is where this pattern prints on the chart.<\/strong> Just like any other countertrend chart pattern, this one has a much higher probability of success if it prints on a key support or resistance zone.<\/p>\n<p>This is an example of a bullish Batman. It's just the opposite of the the example above, but the principles are the same.<\/p>\n<p>Again, we see the big spike into the support level, followed by consolidation. Then another push lower that's rejected, and price heads higher.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1019130\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1019130\" style=\"width: 1264px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/reverse-batman.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1019130 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/reverse-batman.jpg\" alt=\"Bullish Batman pattern\" width=\"1274\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/reverse-batman.jpg 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/reverse-batman-768x359.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1019130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click to enlarge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The Psychology Behind a Batman<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Like any other chart pattern, you shouldn't look at the pattern in isolation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Take a few minutes to understand the market backstory, psychology behind the pattern and what it's telling you about the market.<\/p>\n<p>When you understand what traders are doing behind the scenes, it's easier for you to identify a high quality setup.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of a Batman is a strong trend. Obviously, this isn't close to being a Batman yet, but it's an important precursor.<\/p>\n<p>When the market moves swiftly like this, it's also more likely to move quickly through this area of the chart, in the opposite direction. There's no guarantee that it will move through this part of the chart again.<\/p>\n<p>But if it does, it will probably move rapidly. That means quick profits.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;and that's good for a Batman trade.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trend-1.png\" alt=\"Batman price in a trend\" width=\"1274\" height=\"595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trend-1.png 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trend-1-768x359.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, price approaches a strong zone.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is when it's time to pay attention.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remember that this has to be a significant zone. The more times price has touched this zone and decisively rejected it, the better.<\/p>\n<p>Take a minute to look at the history of the chart and see how significant this level has been. If it hasn't been that significant, then this probably isn't a good opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Now we wait to see what happens. You'll notice a strong rejection at this point.<\/p>\n<p>That's the left ear.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/left.png\" alt=\"Left ear\" width=\"1274\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/left.png 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/left-768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The bulls gear up to make another push and this is where price consolidates. There's a lot of buying and selling here as the bulls and bears battle it out for what the next big move will be.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/consolidation-1.png\" alt=\"Batman price consolidation\" width=\"1274\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/consolidation-1.png 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/consolidation-1-768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally the bulls give it another try, and fail again. This forms the right ear and is another sharp price rejection of the key zone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/second-.png\" alt=\"Batman right ear\" width=\"1274\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/second-.png 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/second--768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That's when there's an opportunity to possibly take a trade because there's a good chance that price will start to move away from the support or resistance zone. In this case, it's a resistance zone.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it doesn't always work out as nicely as this, but here's what this opportunity ended up looking like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019129\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/final.png\" alt=\"Batman final result\" width=\"1274\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/final.png 1274w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/final-768x329.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1274px) 100vw, 1274px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Where to Enter a Trade<\/h2>\n<p>There are three places that you can potentially enter a Batman. Stick around because I'll show you how to test this for yourself.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At the right &#8220;ear&#8221; rejection<\/li>\n<li>At a break of the &#8220;forehead&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>On a retest of the pattern<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Ear Entry<\/h3>\n<p>This is most aggressive entry, and potentially the most profitable&#8230;but also the most risky. It's riskier because you have less confirmation that price will reverse.<\/p>\n<p>For this entry, you are going to try to enter as close to the top of the right ear as possible. The idea is to enter when you are reasonably confident that the level is going to be rejected, but not too late that you miss out on a majority of the profits.<\/p>\n<p>In our example trade, this might be a good place to go short.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1019132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eurjpy-entry.png\" alt=\"Early entry\" width=\"1627\" height=\"907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eurjpy-entry.png 1627w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eurjpy-entry-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/eurjpy-entry-1536x856.png 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1627px) 100vw, 1627px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Forehead Entry<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The next place that you can enter is when price closes below the forehead. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a level that's drawn at the support zone.<\/p>\n<p>It also helps if there was a test of the level from the bottom, as you see to the left of this chart. This pattern will usually fail at the forehead or the right ear of the pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the points on the example chart. These are the areas on the chart that price is most likely to continue upwards, in this example. The pattern appears at both market tops and bottoms.<\/p>\n<p>So keep an eye out for this pattern on the timeframe that you currently trade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But be sure to test the pattern before you start risking real money on it.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Is the Batman a Type of Head and Shoulders?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, the Batman is more like a double top. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even though we are using Batman's head to describe a chart pattern, this is not a head and shoulders (H\/S) formation.<\/p>\n<p>A H\/S has three pushes into a zone. The middle push is the strongest, with the other two being weaker&#8230;looking like shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>The concept behind them is similar. Harmonic patterns also include the Gartley, crab and butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>They use Fibonacci retracement levels to predict price movement, and are <em>way<\/em> too complex to get into in this article.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to learn more about them, you can check them out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/articles\/forex\/11\/harmonic-patterns-in-the-currency-markets.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bat pattern looks nothing like the Batman pattern.<\/p>\n<p>I'll have more about harmonic patterns in future posts, but for the purposes of this post, it's enough to say that harmonic bat patterns are totally different from Batman patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>Does it Really Work?<\/h2>\n<p>Alright, now this is all great in theory, but does this chart pattern actually work?<\/p>\n<p><em>Does it give you a quantifiable edge in the markets?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>That's what we will take a look at in the next Batman chart pattern blog post.
