This step-by-step guide will show you exactly what you need to get started with the desktop version of this <strong>free <em>manual<\/em> Forex backtesting software<\/strong> right now.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn't able to find a good manual on how to setup Traders Gym, even on the ThinkMarkets website, so I decided to create one.<\/p>\n<p>Stick around until the end to find out how well Traders Gym compares to the top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/naked-markets-software-review\/\">backtesting software<\/a> out there.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9sIw4Ts2hIw\" width=\"840\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">?<\/span><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>Step 1: Download the Desktop Version of ThinkTrader<\/h2>\n<p>Get started by going to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkmarkets.com\/en\/trading-platforms\/thinktrader\/thinktrader-for-desktop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ThinkTrader website<\/a>. Then download the appropriate version for your device.<\/p>\n<p>The link is at the top of the page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I would highly recommend using the desktop version for backtesting. It's much easier to use than the mobile versions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-desktop-.jpg\" alt=\"ThinkTrader desktop download\" width=\"1520\" height=\"892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-desktop-.jpg 1520w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-desktop--768x451.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1520px) 100vw, 1520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ThinkTrader used to be called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/trade-interceptor-mac-review-september-2014-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trade Interceptor<\/a>, so don't get confused if you see both names online.<\/p>\n<p>There are still some Trade Interceptor webpages out there. They simply redirect to ThinkTrader when it comes time to download the app.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Setup an Account and Login<\/h2>\n<p>Once the software is installed, sign up for an account. It's free to sign up and allows you to use the backtesting feature.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have a login, open ThinkTrader and enter your username and password.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure that the <em>Traders Gym<\/em> button is selected, then click the <em>Login<\/em> button.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/think-trader-login-screen.jpg\" alt=\"ThinkTrader login screen\" width=\"369\" height=\"458\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Create a New Chart<\/h2>\n<p>One weird glitch with Traders Gym is that there's no easy way to go back to the beginning of a chart.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, if you open a new chart and there's already a chart open on that currency pair, your new chart will start where your existing chart stopped.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Therefore, in order start a fresh chart at the beginning of the data set, you need to open a chart for a currency pair that is not already open.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, let's say that you have a EURUSD chart currently open and you've stopped at 11\/2\/2019. When you go to open another EURUSD chart, it will also open at 11\/2\/2019, not at the starting date that you select.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you understand that, open a new chart by clicking the plus symbol at the top of your screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-add-chart.jpg\" alt=\"Add chart ThinkTrader\" width=\"778\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-add-chart.jpg 778w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-add-chart-768x498.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A popup window will allow you to set the parameters for your test.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020510\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configuration-thinktrader.jpg\" alt=\"Traders Gym configuration\" width=\"820\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configuration-thinktrader.jpg 820w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/configuration-thinktrader-768x322.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can select the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Feed:<\/strong> There are only 2 data sources available. The default TT feed is a good place to start.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symbol:<\/strong> Select the symbol you want to test. Stocks are also available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price type:<\/strong> Select bid, ask or average.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Timescale:<\/strong> This is the timeframe chart you want to use for you test.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Initial interval selection:<\/strong> Drag the slider all the way to the left to start testing from the first date in your selected range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It initially looks like you can only backtest 1 year of data, but you can actually get more history. If you click the lower left date on the slider, it allows you to select an older date.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/date-picker-.jpg\" alt=\"ThinkTrader date picker\" width=\"462\" height=\"330\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once those settings look good, click <em>OK<\/em> to get started with your test.<\/p>\n<p><em>When your chart first opens, the candles will be huge!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adjusting the zoom on the chart is not intuitive. The only way that I found to zoom in and out is to use the scroll wheel on your mouse, or scroll up and down on your trackpad.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Step 4: Add Your Indicators<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Once your chart opens, you can add indicators by clicking on the <em>Indicators<\/em> button in the toolbar in the middle of the screen.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They provide most of the popular indicators, so there's a good chance that your favorite indicator is there.<\/p>\n<p>Traders Gym doesn't allow you to upload custom indicators, so if you trade with a custom indicator, you're out of luck.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/add-indicators-to-thinktrader.jpg\" alt=\"Add indicators to ThinkTrader\" width=\"738\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 5: Set Your Speed<\/h2>\n<p>The last thing that you have to do before you start testing is to set the speed at which your charts will move forward.<\/p>\n<p>There are 2 settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tick size:<\/strong> Set how much each tick will move. For example, you could be testing on the Daily chart, but you want to see each tick move on the 4-Hour timeframe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Overall chart speed:<\/strong> Set how fast the chart will scroll forward.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/speed-settings-thinktrader.jpg\" alt=\"Speed settings in Traders Gym\" width=\"375\" height=\"218\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Step 6: Start Placing Trades<\/h2>\n<p>Now you're ready to start testing!<\/p>\n<p>To start testing, hit the play button below the chart. You can use the back and forward arrows to move one candle at a time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-play-button.jpg\" alt=\"ThinkTrader play button\" width=\"431\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you want to take a trade, simply right-click on the chart and select <em>Order window<\/em> from the menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/order-window.jpg\" alt=\"Traders Gym order window\" width=\"198\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That will bring you to the order window. Input the details of your trade and click <em>Place Order<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/thinktrader-input-screen.jpg\" alt=\"Enter trade in ThinkTrader\" width=\"293\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Your trade will appear in the <em>Active<\/em> tab in the account section of the screen. Use the <em>Pending<\/em> tab to see pending orders and the <em>History<\/em> tab to see all of your past trades.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020519\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/active-trades.jpg\" alt=\"Active trades in Traders Gym\" width=\"991\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/active-trades.jpg 991w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/active-trades-768x210.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To close the trade right-click on the trade and select <em>Close selected orders<\/em>. You would also use the same process to do any of the following functions below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/close-trade-1.jpg\" alt=\"Close ThinkTrader trade\" width=\"453\" height=\"213\" \/> You can use the settings button to deposit or withdraw funds, or delete the account.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020521\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/settings-button-.jpg\" alt=\"Settings button ThinkTrader\" width=\"272\" height=\"106\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To create a new account, click the plus symbol next to the account tabs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-trading-account.jpg\" alt=\"New trading account in Traders Gym\" width=\"991\" height=\"271\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-trading-account.jpg 991w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-trading-account-768x210.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 991px) 100vw, 991px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>ThinkTrader Traders Gym Review<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few of my thoughts after using Traders Gym. The biggest upsides are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It's free<\/li>\n<li>You can use it on desktop and mobile platforms<\/li>\n<li>They provide a good amount of <em>free<\/em> historical data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>However, there are some downsides.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have several issues with this software, but these are the top 3.<\/p>\n<h3>Frequent Disconnection<\/h3>\n<p><strong>An annoying thing with ThinkTrader (Mac) is that it keeps dropping the internet connection and reconnecting. This makes the icon bounce on the bottom of my screen and is really distracting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don't know of any trading program that has to reconnect so often.<\/p>\n<p>It really makes me wonder how reliable this would be if it was used for live trading.<\/p>\n<p>This literally happens every 5 to 10 minutes or so&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1020509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bouncing.gif\" alt=\"ThinkTrader bouncing logo\" width=\"342\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Have to be Connected to the Internet to Backtest<\/h3>\n<p>One of the biggest benefits of software like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/forex-tester-4-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forex Tester<\/a> is that you can download the price data to your computer and backtest offline.<\/p>\n<p>I can see where this might not be possible on the mobile versions of ThinkTrader because mobile devices tend to have very limited storage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Downloading data is certainly possible on most desktop devices however, but is not available on the desktop version of ThinkTrader.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>In addition, you need to be connected to the internet and login to even get to the backtesting screen.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I understand why they do this, but it doesn't make sense when it comes to backtesting.<\/p>\n<h3>Only 1 Data Source, No Option to Upload<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, there's no option to upload custom data or indicators. It would be nice to be able to import my own data sets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/download-mt4-historical-data\/\">like you can do<\/a> with MetaTrader.<\/p>\n<p>If you need custom indicators for your trading strategy, then you're totally out of luck with ThinkTrader.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>So that's how you start manual backtesting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkmarkets.com\/en\/trading-platforms\/thinktrader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Traders Gym<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You are probably wondering if ThinkTrader is worth using for Forex backtesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The answer to that is relative.
