I'll also show you why you may want to use this EA builder, even if you are a discretionary trader.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watch the video above to see my review of VSB and a weird trading strategy that I stumbled upon with VSB that had 10% winners, but made 900+%.<\/p>\n<p>The text version of the VSB review and updates are provided below.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UPDATE:<\/span><\/strong> VSB is now called <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.forextester.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Easy Forex Builder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Automated Backtesting Can Be For Discretionary Traders Too<\/h2>\n<p>Before I get into the review, it's important to understand that automated backtesting isn't only for 100% automated traders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Automated backtesting can help discretionary traders to quickly test basic ideas or optimize part of their trading strategy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I call it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/how-to-get-started-with-incremental-automation-in-forex-trading\/\">Incremental Automation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You only automate the parts of your trading process that make sense, and you can manually control the rest.<\/p>\n<h2>My Results Using VSB to Build an EA Without Coding<\/h2>\n<p>To test VSB, I created a super simple EA for MT4 and I backtested it in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/forex\/backtesting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Forex Tester 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I find it much easier to use Forex Tester 4 for automated backtesting.<\/p>\n<p>That's one of the reasons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/tradingview-review\/\">I stopped using MetaTrader<\/a> as my primary trading\/charting platform.<\/p>\n<p>But Metatrader is still the best platform for <em>running<\/em> automated trading strategies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/forex-trading-tools\/\">alert indicators<\/a>, so it's my secondary trading platform.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I started in VSB with a very basic idea.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to know what would happen if I bought every time price closed above the 50 EMA on the daily chart, and I set my stop loss to 25 pips and my take profit to 250 pips.<\/p>\n<p><em>That's sounds like a crap system&#8230;but you never know for sure, until you try it out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So here's what it looks like in VSB.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/EA-50ema-10r.jpg\" alt=\"Trading strategy: 50EMA 10R\" width=\"867\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/EA-50ema-10r.jpg 867w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/EA-50ema-10r-768x562.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Creating the strategy took me all of 5 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Then I downloaded the strategy for Forex Tester, installed it and started backtesting.<\/p>\n<p>I tested it on four currency pairs and it blew out the account on three pairs.<\/p>\n<p>But when I tested with the GBPJPY, it did surprisingly well.<\/p>\n<p>The EA made 900+% over about 13 years.<\/p>\n<p>I certainly wouldn't recommend trading this system, but it can be a good starting point for creating a reliable trading strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Now let's get into what I discovered about VSB, after doing this test.<\/p>\n<h2>Upsides of VSB<\/h2>\n<p>Here's what I liked about it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very easy to create basic EAs for MT4 and FT4<\/li>\n<li>You can download the source code for your EA and edit it manually in MetaTrader Editor<\/li>\n<li>Create templates, EAs and indicators<\/li>\n<li>The EA builder workflow is easy to understand and use<\/li>\n<li>This tool can be used to build commercial EAs and indicators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Downsides of VSB<\/h2>\n<p>There are things about this software that I'm not impressed with.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the downsides of VSB:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I would love to see support for candlestick patterns in the EA and indicator builders<\/li>\n<li>The EA I created executed two trades per signal, when it should have only executed one, so there's a bug there<\/li>\n<li>Indicators are hard to build, I couldn't create an indicator that I found remotely useful<\/li>\n<li>The download process doesn't work reliably. Sometimes I have to download the EA twice.<\/li>\n<li>It's difficult to create complex trading strategies<\/li>\n<li>The free plan is extremely limited, you really do have to sign up for the paid plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Visual Strategy Builder is a very basic tool and it does have some potential uses.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, these are the best ways to utilize Visual Strategy Builder:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Test parts of new trading ideas to get hard data on how they work. Then you can combine different ideas to create a complete trading strategy.<\/li>\n<li>Test elements of an existing trading strategy to optimize its performance.<\/li>\n<li>Create basic trading strategies, then download the code and build around it. You can learn how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/learn-mt4-programming\/\">get started with MT4 coding here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can setup a free VSB account <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.forextester.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They do have paid plans, but you can do some very basic testing with their free plan.<\/p>\n<p>Forex Tester will also convert your MT4 indicators (in .mq4 format) into Forex Tester indicators, so you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/forex-backtesting-guide\/\">backtest<\/a> your strategies with the same indicators.<\/p>\n<p>But it doesn't always work properly. I found that it works about 50% of the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UPDATE:<\/span><\/strong> Since writing this review, I've found a better solution.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/tag\/nakedmarkets-tutorials\/\">NakedMarkets<\/a> has a much more powerful no-code strategy builder and there is only a one-time fee, instead of paying the monthly fee for VSB\/EFB.<\/p>\n<p>I can create more complex trading strategies and test them quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The only downside at the moment is that NakedMarkets cannot export the strategies to MetaTrader EAs, but they are working on that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Visual Strategy Builder (VSB) is a tool that allows you to build MetaTrader EAs without writing any code.
