{"id":6989,"date":"2013-04-16T05:00:49","date_gmt":"2013-04-16T12:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/?p=6989"},"modified":"2024-12-27T23:35:33","modified_gmt":"2024-12-28T06:35:33","slug":"what-is-your-trading-personality-timeframe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/what-is-your-trading-personality-timeframe\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Find the Trading Timeframe That Matches Your Personality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/clock.jpg\" alt=\"Trading time\" width=\"800\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/clock.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/clock-768x351.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"post-aff-notice\">When you buy something through one of the links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.<\/div><\/p>\n<p>This is a concept that took me awhile to understand, but I feel that it is <strong>very important,<\/strong> so I hope that you get some amazing insights\u00a0out of this exercise.<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest things that you have to figure out on your trading journey is your <strong>Trading Timeframe Personality (TTP)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I fought this for awhile and I struggled.<\/p>\n<p>But once I started working <em>with<\/em> my personality, things became much easier.<\/p>\n<p>I'm not saying that this is the only thing that you should pay attention to in your trading education, but it is one of the big pieces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you haven't found your TTP yet, you need to do this exercise.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be sure to have your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/trading-travel-setup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notebook<\/a>\u00a0handy and write down your questions, ideas and answers.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Trading Timeframe\u00a0Personality (TTP)?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is simply the timeframe that you feel most comfortable trading on. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>If you are comfortable trading on that timeframe, you give yourself a much greater chance of success.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are only two factors that must be taken into consideration when figuring out your TTP:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your daily\u00a0schedule<\/li>\n<li>Your unique personality and attention span<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many times, we only take one factor into account when choosing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/trading-education-methods\/\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"243\">education program or trading method<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To get the best results, and to reduce your frustration, <strong>you need to consider both<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also consider if your trading platform can support the timeframe you want to trade on.<\/p>\n<h2>Your Current Schedule<\/h2>\n<p>If you don't have a lot of time to trade, then being a scalper on a 1 minute chart might not be the best thing for you.<\/p>\n<p>This is certainly the case if you have a demanding day job or you have a lot of family obligations.<\/p>\n<p>I know that this sounds obvious, but I have been guilty of this myself and I have seen others make this same mistake.<\/p>\n<p>It's easy to be attracted to the excitement of daytrading when you really should be focusing on longer timeframes.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you have the time to daytrade, it is something you should\u00a0try out.<\/p>\n<p>You might be good at it.<\/p>\n<p>Swing trading might not be your thing and that is why you are losing money.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Figure it Out<\/h3>\n<p>Let's start with where you are now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sit down and ask yourself two simple questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many hours a week can I realistically commit to trading?<\/li>\n<li>Can my dedicated trading time be set or does it have to be variable? For example, can I trade only between 1pm and 5pm? Or do I have four total hours to trade, spread out over the course of the day?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Be honest with yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When considering your answers, take into account obligations such as your family, your work and time for leisure activities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I would also subtract 30% from any hourly number you come up with.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, if you think that you have 20 variable hours to trade a week, subtract 30% or 6 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Assume that you only have 14 hours to trade.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is because we tend to overestimate what we can accomplish in a day.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Then\u00a0take a look at which forex markets are open during the time you have to trade. This mostly\u00a0applies if you have set hours to trade.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/forex-market-hours-volume.jpg\" alt=\"forex market hours and volume\" width=\"393\" height=\"466\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are only available during low activity\u00a0times, you may want to trade on a longer time frame.<\/p>\n<p>Having the London or New York sessions available for set, short-term trading hours\u00a0is ideal.<\/p>\n<p>If you don't know when certain markets are open in your timezone, then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/forex-market-hours-clock\/\">use this tool<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Write down your answers\u00a0to this exercise\u00a0in your notebook right now.<\/p>\n<h2>Your Personality<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trading-personality-venn3.jpg\" alt=\"Trading personality venn diagram\" width=\"900\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trading-personality-venn3.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/trading-personality-venn3-768x427.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, let's talk about your personality and attention span.<\/p>\n<p>Think back to when you were in school&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Were you able to study for long periods of time, or did you have trouble?<\/p>\n<p>Do you prefer instant gratification, or are you willing to wait a little?<\/p>\n<p><em>This can give you insight into which timeframe(s) you should be trading on.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>How to Figure it Out<\/h3>\n<p>Ideas to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you prefer to see things to completion every day? &#8211; If yes, you might be a better day trader or scalper.<\/li>\n<li>Are you willing to wait a few days or even weeks to see your trades play out? Maybe you like to be able to enter your positions even if you are a little late to the charts?\u00a0&#8211; If yes, you might be suited to swing trading.<\/li>\n<li>Do you prefer to check your trades once\u00a0a days or even just once a week? &#8211; If yes, then position trading might be your best bet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Really think about your personality and how you react when you are in trades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One timeframe won't necessarily make more money than another, so don't let that factor into your decision.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You might also consider taking some online personality tests for traders.<\/p>\n<p>Never trust any canned test 100%.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0if they are all telling you a similar\u00a0thing, then you should probably give it more consideration.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few to get you started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.babypips.com\/school\/graduation\/personality-quizzes\/which-trading-style-is-best-for-you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Baby Pips<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tests.marketpsych.com\/test_question.php?id=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Market Psychology<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Van Tharp<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyfx.com\/forex\/fundamental\/article\/special_report\/2011\/03\/02\/what_kind_of_forex_trader_are_you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DailyFX<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Now Do Some Testing in a Demo Account<\/h2>\n<p>Open a demo account at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/resources\/best-forex-brokers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">favorite broker<\/a> to test different timeframes.<\/p>\n<p>I would recommend testing them all at the same time, to get to your answer quickly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The trading method doesn't really matter for this test.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You could\u00a0use technical analysis, fundamental analysis or astrology.<\/p>\n<p><em>You are only testing for timeframe right now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do it for about a month and see what happens.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to keep a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/how-to-journal-your-forex-trades-with-evernote\/\">trading journal<\/a> to see which timeframe is working the best for you.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Daytrading or Scalping<\/strong> (1 hour chart or below)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swing Trading<\/strong> (between 4 hour and daily charts)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Position Trading<\/strong> (between the weekly and monthly charts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>What did you notice?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pay particular attention to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On what timeframe did you miss trades?<\/li>\n<li>Was one timeframe noticeably easier to trade on?<\/li>\n<li>Where you tempted to mess with open trades on a certain timeframe?<\/li>\n<li>Which timeframe did you lose the most money on?<\/li>\n<li>Did you find yourself getting anxious on any one timeframe?<\/li>\n<li>Where you up at night thinking about a trade? That might not be the best timeframe to trade on.<\/li>\n<li>Did you overtrade on a certain timeframe?<\/li>\n<li>Was your life getting in the way with certain timeframes?<\/li>\n<li>And more&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>At the end of this exercise you should have your answer. Even if you aren't 100% sold on the result, just stick\u00a0with it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This will keep you from bouncing back and forth between timeframes and system.<\/p>\n<p>I call this the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/3-ways-the-trading-silodrome-is-killing-your-profits\/\">Trading Silodrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It sucks&#8230;I've been there.<\/p>\n<p>So commit and move forward, even if you don't think it's ideal.<\/p>\n<p>Now you know how to choose the education you get in the future.<\/p>\n<h2>Will Your TTP Stay the Same?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Remember that you also aren't married to this timeframe.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your schedule and trading personality might change, so you might also need to change your timeframe, or add new timeframes (oh yeah!).<\/p>\n<p>For example, let's say that you are able to quit your day job and start trading for a living.<\/p>\n<p>You could then move from the daily charts down to lower timeframes and see if there are patterns that you can exploit for profit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But you need to start from where you are and commit to learning one thing well.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I can't stress this enough.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>True, you might have what it takes to be a badass daytrader.<\/p>\n<p>But if you work a demanding day job, then your trading will be crap.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe you have to step back a little and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingheroes.com\/7-reasons-to-trade-four-hour-charts\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"9\">trade the 4 hour charts<\/a>, with similar patterns.<\/p>\n<p><em>Knowing that you can evolve\u00a0later, might also alleviate some pressure around choosing the &#8220;perfect&#8221; timeframe right now.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>My personal experience has taught me that my TTP is primarily\u00a0<strong>swing trading<\/strong>, which is mostly on the 4 hour and daily charts.<\/p>\n<p>It gives me time to see a trade and react.<\/p>\n<p>I generally don't have the patience to\u00a0sit around and scalp.<\/p>\n<p>I also find that I get antsy when I position trade on the weekly charts and I find myself wanting to adjust positions or take swing trades around the position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bottom line is that you need to experiment for yourself and see what works for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now get to work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many aspiring traders are on the wrong trading timeframe.
